new, rising talents. Discovered Richard Marx and helped Harry Connick Jr.
get the score-writing job for the movie "When Harry Met Sally," which made
him famous (Connick even wrote a tune, "Colomby Day," which is on his "Lofty's

Al Kooper still performs rather often, at least in New York City, where
he usually plays at the Bottom Line. He has played gigs with his own band,
with the Rockbottom Remainders (consisting of top-notch authors like Stephen
King, Amy Tan and Matt Groenig, among others), with Jimmy Vivino (his "protegee"
-- Al plays on Vivino Brothers' Chitlins Parmigiana album, too), various
versions of the Blues Project, and most recently, he has put up two concerts
where his blues band (consisting of Jimmy Vivino, Harvey Brooks and Anton
Fig) have competed against another blues band. Kooper's gigs are always
great: excellent music and his superb humor combined -- he is in a great
shape. In March, 1993, Kooper had two nights at the Bottom Line with the
"Child Is Father to the Man Band," as he calls it, celebrating the 25th
anniversary of the "Child..." album. The band included Kooper, Jim Fielder,
Steve Katz, Fred Lipsius, Randy Brecker, Lew Soloff, Tom Malone plus Anton
Fig on drums, Jimmy Vivino on guitar in some tunes, and John Simon (producer
of that album) on piano in one tune, plus a two-girl chorus and a string
quartet in those certain tunes. (Kooper could not call the band BST for
understandable reasons!) In February, 1994, Kooper celebrated his 50th
birthday at the Bottom Line with the "Child..." band (Fielder was replaced
by Will Lee), the Blues Project, and Rekooperators (playing music from
a recent album by that name). Rekooperators included also Lou Marini playing
with the Uptown Horns hornsection. The album, "Soul of a Man: Al Kooper
Live" (MusicMasters 01612 65113-2) was recorded at the gig, but is a strange
album, because Steve Katz' parts have been erased and replace by another
guitarist, and Jim Fielder plays a bass solo even though he was not at
the gig. Also, Marini is not mentioned even though he was there...The double
CD includes a killer trumpet duel between Soloff and Brecker...They were
incredible at the concert. The most recent news about Kooper is that in
August this year he will move to Boston to teach at the famous Berklee
College of Music. He will teach songwriting and record production. (Lipsius
also teaches there.) Kooper has not produced an album for eight years,
except his own and Vivino's albums. Released "Black Coffee" 2005.

Jerry LaCroix
Joined:1974 Left:1974

He has two solo album out, "La Croix" and "Second Coming." both on Epic
records.
-
Just as quickly as he left the band, he joined another: Rare Earth’s manager soon came calling,
and as LaCroix recalled in the same interview, “He flew me out to L.A. and we talked a little bit
and he said, ‘Oh, by the way, tomorrow we’re going to be on Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert. You want
to sing with us?’ No rehearsal, no nothing. I just got on live TV and sang ‘Get Ready.’ He said
and then, day after tomorrow, we’re going on tour. So I had to learn all of their songs in two days.
” While LaCroix continued to enjoy local legend status in the Louisiana and Texas Gulf Coast region,
he turned his back on the music industry after the ’80s; at one point, he told Swampland, “I was
living up in Oregon cutting wood. A guy had a 2000-acre ranch. It was just pristine but it wasn’t music.
” Returning to Texas to care for his ailing father, he started a new band, but he harbored no delusions
of grandeur regarding that stage of his career. “I’m doing a compilation tape of things I’ve recorded
in the past. A little package to give more or less as souvenirs to people who come to see us. Demos,
if somebody wants to hear something,” he mused in one late interview. “I’m also working on an anthology.
I’m getting my own CD burner so I can make my own CDs and do them out of the back end of the Winnebago.”
After the turn of the century, LaCroix dedicated himself to caring for his elderly mother, but in the summer
of 2010, his own health took a turn for the worse. Local musicians banded together to help raise money
for his medical care after he suffered congestive heart failure; he recovered enough to perform at his
induction into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in January of 2012, but over time, his condition continued
to deteriorate.
He died on May 8, 2014, at the age of 70. .

Report where he became world-famous. He totally revolutionized his instrument
and left behind an incredibly rich body of work that will stand the test
of time. In jazz schools and music conservatories all over the world, his
name is spoken by students in the same reverential tones reserved for such
gods as Bird and Mozart. Plagued by wild mood swings and the emotional
difficulties brought on by diagnosed manic depression, a condition only
exacerbated by alcohol and cocaine. Physically beaten, homeless, penniless,
and hopelessly out of touch with reality, he met his tragic death in a
bar in Miami Florida on September 21, 1987, ten weeks short of his 36th
